RELYING ON RELATIVE COMPRESSION TESTING TO ASSESS ENGINE ISSUES:

This test uses the digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) and a high amp clamp to measure starter amperage draw at a time base fast enough to see the impact each cylinder has on that draw.

1. Synch the pattern to a given cylinder and use the firing order of the engine to identify weak cylinder(s). A weak cylinder takes less effort to spin through than a strong one does, and that means it also takes less current, and that is displayed on the scope's screen.

2. Modern pressure transducers allow relative compression tests to be done via the exhaust pressure pulses leaving the tail pipe. Cylinders that are healthy will pass equal pressure pulses through the exhaust that the sensor can detect. A weak cylinder will show up as a weaker peak in the pattern.

3. The pattern can be synched to help identify the bad cylinder(s). Here, though, the pulse displayed will be offset from the originating cylinder. When viewing these patterns, look for anomalies rather than specifics. Some exhaust designs cause one bank to have a longer route to follow than the other, and this can reduce the amplitude of the pattern on all the cylinders for that bank.

NOTE: If there is a weakness, the pressure transducer can determine if the fault is in the valve train or cylinder.

1. Be sure to disable the fuel and ignition systems to avoid both over fueling the cylinders and accidental engine start.

2. Remove the oil dipstick and put a rubber hose over the tube, connecting the sensor to the tube.

3. Crank over the engine and watch the pattern. A pressure increase will be present each time a piston heads for bottom dead center.

If the rings are sealing properly, the peaks will be uniform and the loss of compression you found has to be caused by the top end.

SECONDARY IGNITION PATTERNS TO SLOVE ENGINE MYSTERIES:

This takes some skill, but you can master it.

1. Look at the average of the firing lines (firing voltage demand) for all the cylinders.

It's normal for the firing line of an individual cylinder to vary as conditions vary in the combustion process. Any cylinder that has a consistently lower firing line is suspect.

2. Watch the spark line closely. No compression in a cylinder will not only have a lower firing demand, but the spark (or burn) line will be flat and longer than the others.

NOTE: When a valve doesn't seal, the pressures built up in the cylinder have a path to escape through. It shows up in the pattern as a series of peaks in what should otherwise be a relatively smooth slope. Some turbulence at higher engine speeds is normal, though, so don't confuse the two.

By following the three tests outlined above, you should be able to gain a better understanding of the problems the engine may be experiencing. With luck, you should be one step closer to providing your customer with the auto repair information they need.

As an employee you interact with your co-workers and supervisors on a continuous basis. You work hard to do your job; to get along with others; and hopefully, to do your part as a team player by keeping a watchful eye on the day to day procedures of the manufacturing process and looking for those areas that could benefit from improvement. Yet, whenever you relate those observations to others it seems your concerns go unnoticed and you cannot understand why. Perhaps it is not what you are doing, but how you are doing it!

PERCEPTION IS THE KEY

Someone told me a long time ago that it is usually not what you are doing, but what you are perceived to be doing; not who you are, but rather, who you are perceived to be. Most individuals have a profound tendency to make a few observations and pass judgment. They will compare these observations to past experiences and quickly infer what they believe is happening without asking if there could possibly be any other reasons for what seems to be unfolding before their very eyes. As a result, you will often times be judged improperly and unfairly. This is a fact of life, it is simply human nature, and if you are to succeed, you need to be aware of how you are perceived by others.

One common example of this misconception is the employee who is well organized, focused and productive. If you are diligent, organized and adept at multitasking, you will undoubtedly be seen by some people as a slacker. They will see others with a cluttered work area, running around frantically, complaining that they have too much on their plate and since they are typically the status quo, you will stand out. Since you are not complaining and appear to be relaxed and in control, they will assume you are not doing enough, when in fact, you may have already accomplished more in one day than they will in a week.

It is usually the unique or distinct persons who stand out, but standing out is not always a good thing. You need to balance being noticed with being understood and the first step in accomplishing this feat is to be aware of how others perceive your actions, or in many cases, inactions.

NO MIDDLE OF THE ROAD

Whatever your actions or intentions you must realize, in no uncertain terms, that you will be categorized into one of two areas: others will see you as either part of the problem or part of the solution. There should be no middle of the road, no fence sitting. Plain and simple; if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.

Take a stand whenever possible. If you really dont have a stand, you still need to work toward the common goal, so always strive to be part of the solution to the problems that arise. If you do not have specific positive input you still need to relate your willingness to work toward a successful solution. If you do not offer solutions you will either be perceived as; unwilling to solve the problem, incapable of solving the problem, or often times, just another whiner.

NO ONE LIKES A WHINER

Nobody likes another whiner; there are far too many of them out there already. When you approach a problem by stating: you do not like this, or someone ought to do something about that, then you are a whiner, period. By not offering solutions you are simply stating what most others already know. You are wasting their time and you are indirectly stating your unwillingness or inability to help.

Instead, you should approach every problem as an opportunity. You should analyze the situation and try to determine a few reasonable approaches to solving the problem. If you find there are no reasonable solutions that come to mind, you may want to hold off on calling attention to the issue until you have had some time to study the situation further. If you still cannot come up with any suggestions, be careful, you just might be whining!

In bringing the problem to light, you should be prepared to first state your observations, then offer your solutions, and finally, make known your willingness to participate in resolving the issue. Now you will be seen as part of the solution. Now you will be perceived as a team player. Only now will your comments be taken seriously.

TAKE OWNERSHIP

It is not enough to point out problems. You need to take ownership of them as well. This lends you credibility and makes you stand out as an asset to the organization. Anyone can find fault, not everyone can offer solutions, and fewer still will step up to the plate and take responsibility for improvement. So make the problem your problem and be part of the solution.

Offer to solve the problem. If you dont have an immediate solution, then offer to serve on a team which will address the problem. Better yet, offer to put that team together and to head it up yourself. In doing so you will ensure your concerns are dealt with. It is very difficult to tell someone you do not want them to fix something that needs to be fixed. So when you bring forth solutions to problems and demonstrate a willingness to work towards a positive resolution, you will not only be taken seriously, but more often than not, you will be given the resources you need to be successful.

BE CAREFUL OF HOW YOU PERCEIVE OTHERS

Treat others in the same manner you wish to be treated. Take their concerns seriously. Dont be judgmental, instead, give them the benefit of the doubt and avoid letting the facts get in the way of the truth. Ask yourself if there could be any other reasons for the actions you observe. Determine their true intentions and find out what they are really doing, not just what they might be perceived to be doing.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

Be aware of how you perceive others and how they perceive you
Dont look for problems, search for opportunities
Bring only legitimate opportunities forward
Dont whine, get off the fence and take a stand
Offer solutions
Take ownership
Participate in improvement

When you go through the painful divorce experience, sometimes revenge runs rampant inside your mind, doesn't it? You certainly don't like what's happened to you. You frequently turn this type of thinking toward your ex, whom you think of as the ogre.

You can only control yours, so why not decide today precisely what you will think the next time he/she tried to bait you. How about this: I am centered in my own truth and the lies that come at me fall away harmless without my emotional reaction. Or create one of your own. "I know you are but what am I?" won't work, so you'll have to dig deep and come up with something that will work for you.

Put Your Children First on the List. You want to set an exemplary example for your children. If your emotions are not in control, that's what you are teaching them. If you gossip about your ex in front of them, that's what you are teaching them. If you keep an undisciplined environment, that's what you are teaching them. If you are unforgiving and you refuse to forget what's happened in the past, that's what you are teaching them.

Forgiveness can be easy. You simply say the words "I forgive you." You follow those words with a good reason for why you forgive them. "You must be in a world of hurt yourself to say something so hurtful to me. You must be ignorant of how hurtful those words are to me. You must be awash in emotions yourself to lash out so." You are forgiving and you are giving a reasonable excuse for his behavior to yourself so that you can let go of it. Drop it and move on with your life. Forgiveness is for giving yourself your own next best thing. What a wonderful thing to teach to your children.

Forgetting can be just as easy. In order to forget, you have to put something else in the place of the thing you want to forget. If I tell you "Don't think about purple elephants" you will only remember purple elephants unless you can replace that with another idea - how about green alligators? For getting your next great idea in place of the emotionally-burdened one, just put another good idea in it's place. And then put a guard at the door to your thinking with orders not to let in any purple elephants! You can ease your children into their maturity with these techniques.

Become Introspective. Going within for a few moments when you've got some quiet time can be so beneficial for both you and your children. I came to cherish that last hour of the day when I was alone with my coffee, a book, the TV or just with my journal. It's a great way to sort through the elements of the day, give yourself some distance emotionally from them so that you can decide specifically how you want to handle it the next time. This could be a great time to read a few paragraphs from an inspirational book and think about how they apply to you. Just a few moments can grace you with much needed objectivity during your parenting years.

You could continue to seek for revenge, to blame your ex, to nurse your hurt behind drugs or alcohol, or, you could admit that you also played a role; that it does take two to tango. You can get honest and prevent a second divorce through the exercise of forgiveness. It's good for your kids if you do.

If there is a match between what your client needs and the benefit your product or service offers, then it will be easy to make an honest recommendation if you believe in the product.

Equally, if you do not have a suitable product or service that will meet the client's need, then it is actually better for you as well as for your client if you do NOT try to close a deal.

The reason is that your role as a trusted advisor is something that takes time to build and no time to destroy. Trust is your most precious asset, and if it is in your client's best interests NOT to buy, then you will build trust by explaining that clearly.

If your clients trust you, you need never "sell" your product or service.

Furthermore, you will have built up sufficient goodwill to make it easy for you to ask your client to introduce you to others who might be interested in what you have to offer.

So, from now on, instead of seeking to sell, simply engage your prospects in a client-focused conversation and offer advice as to the best way for your clients to get the benefits they seek.

Once you grasp this powerful "sales secret" and begin to focus your enthusiasm on helping your client rather than on achieving the sale, you will have the potential to become a super salesperson - without even trying!

For example, 1 micron is 1/90th the diameter of a human hair. So not much is getting past a 50 micron rated filter. The third filter in the chain is a carbon filter. Creating new antifreeze from the old

Once the ethylene glycol has successfully been separated from the old additives and all the junk has been filtered out, it is time to add in the new additives. This process is not rocket science and it shouldn't scare you off. Just carefully follow the mixing instructions and use the correct chemicals for the antifreeze recycling equipment you are using. Once the new additives are properly mixed in, you will new looking antifreeze complete with green dye. Once the process is completed, the recycled coolant is good for 2 years or 30,000 miles.
